FDA Forensic Chemistry Center Analysis of MICOM IV

The analysis was performed on the 160 ml remaining in the 500 ml IV bag of MICOM after Mr. Stewardís heart (and the IV drip) stopped.

Approximate pH=8.0

Approximate density (g/mL)=1.02

Elemental concentrations (mcg/mL) by ICP emission spectrometry:

            P= 780

            Na= 3,300

            K= 6,700

            (6700 mcg K+/mL = 171mEq K+/L)

Ion concentrations (mcg/mL) by ion chromatography:

            chloride= 590

            sulfate= 11,000

            phospate= 2,400

Analysis of white particles observed in IV bag and tubing consistent with the presence of calcium carbonate.

Important correction of Abstract #9517:

            Potassium was 6700 mcg/mL, i.e. twice as cardiotoxic as stated in the abstract. The abstract erroneously stated the sodium concentration as the potassium concentration.
